Visual puzzles are a great way to test your observation skills. At first glance, this image seems very simple: a red t-shirt with several visible holes. Yet, most people give the wrong answer because they only look at the front of the garment.
Take a few seconds before reading further… How many holes do you count?
Why is this riddle so misleading?
Our brains tend to only count the most obvious openings. But you have to think about the entire t-shirt:
- The opening of the collar.
- Both rounds.
- The opening at the bottom of the t-shirt.
- The large holes visible in the fabric.
Upon closer inspection, six holes can be seen in the fabric. As these holes go completely through the t-shirt, they are visible through the cardboard placed behind it.
The solution
The calculation is as follows:
- 1 opening for the collar.
- 2 openings for the sleeves.
- 1 opening at the bottom of the t-shirt.
- 6 torn holes in the fabric.
- Total: 10 holes.This is the answer that is generally expected for this puzzle.Why do so many people answer 6?Most participants only count the visible tears in the fabric and forget that the normal openings in a t-shirt are also… holes!These challenges demonstrate how our brain automatically filters out certain pieces of information that are otherwise obvious.And what was your first answer before discovering the solution?
